+1Ov3, a solo exhibition featuring Ana Barriga, debuted at Volery Gallery on April 14th. Eight paintings are on display, each with animals and scenarios that defy the logic we’ve been taught to live by. Barriga tries to keep up with life’s insanity by creating characters formed from freedom who may appear to be tied to lunacy as a reflection of her own frenzies.
The contradiction between reality and the oneiric is present in the series of paintings. Barriga is fascinated by how a whimsical, almost childlike aesthetic may coexist with a cruder narrative. The juxtaposition between the innocent and the guilty, the appearance and the real, and the contrast between a gentle caress and a violent slap of severe irony.
+1Ov3 arises from the precise moment that Barriga is living, unlike earlier shows that had a narrative thread connecting all of the works. The paintings appear to be a reaffirmation of the artist’s identity and what she stands for, as well as a reaffirmation of her work. Barriga’s work offers iconography that is open to the viewer’s interpretation and subjectivity.
The exhibition will be on display at Volery Gallery in Dubai’s DIFC until May 10, 2022. The gallery is open from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
