Los Angeles-based design studio 22RE has introduced a visually striking golf apparel boutique in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. This new retail space takes inspiration from the coastal town’s natural beauty and its well-known Spanish-style architecture. By blending organic textures with modern design elements, the boutique creates a seamless connection between tradition and contemporary luxury.
The boutique’s layout integrates two storefronts into a unified retail experience, ensuring both aesthetic cohesion and functionality. A central, semi-enclosed booth houses the service counter, allowing an open view of the interiors from both display windows. Between the glass façade and the booth, a raised section covered in grass-colored carpet resembles a miniature putting green, reinforcing the golf theme.
Elegant Interiors with Functional Design
The store’s design features scalloped plaster walls finished in Portola’s Brooks Roman Clay shade, contributing to a warm and textured ambiance reminiscent of classic golf clubhouses. Vertical Douglas fir trims accentuate the scalloped peaks, seamlessly tying in with the woodwork used for door and mirror frames.
The flooring showcases terracotta-toned Zia tiles, laid in different patterns to create subtle visual transitions. In the front section, the tiles follow a straight-stack arrangement, while towards the back, they shift into a refined herringbone layout. This thoughtful detail enhances depth and movement throughout the space.
At the rear of the boutique, a wood-lined niche provides a seating area, offering a comfortable space for shoppers. A sleek, minimalist metal clothing rail is set into another niche, ensuring a clean and modern display for apparel. A walnut podium beneath a ruched-fabric Celestia pendant by Tobia and Afra Scarpa adds an element of understated luxury.
An Immersive Shopping Experience
The fitting rooms continue the store’s earthy aesthetic, featuring Zia tiles that extend from the floor up the walls, creating a cohesive and immersive design. A full-height mirror reflects the textures and patterns, enhancing the sense of space. Custom wooden door handles, sculpted into semi-cylindrical shapes, add a bespoke touch to the dressing areas.
This Carmel boutique is the latest collaboration between 22RE and Malbon, following their work on the brand’s Miami location. The studio, founded by Dean Levin in 2021, specializes in creating immersive retail spaces that blend functionality with artistic craftsmanship. Through this project, 22RE continues to push the boundaries of modern retail design while honoring the surrounding environment and heritage.
