New York-based label 3sixteen has teamed up with Saucony to introduce a unique footwear collaboration built around the concept of “Gesso.” Inspired by the artist’s base layer for canvases, the project transforms Saucony’s Peregrine 15 trail shoe into a blank slate for creative expression through natural dyeing and personal customisation.
Creative Concept Inspired by Artist’s Canvas
The “Gesso” collaboration draws on the idea of groundwork and transformation. Much like its namesake, which prepares canvases to absorb colour, this project provides the foundation for wearers to experiment and express themselves. According to 3sixteen, this concept goes beyond style — encouraging each buyer to reimagine their pair over time.
Set to debut on July 10, the initial release includes “Indigo” and “Sunflower” colourways. Two more shades — “Granite” and “Rubia” — will follow later in July. A fifth variation called “Blank Canvas” is scheduled for July 17. All styles will be available via 3sixteen’s online store and at their New York and Los Angeles flagships.
Natural Dyes Add Character to Every Pair
Each shoe in the collection is dyed using plant-based materials through a process developed with Green Matters Natural Dye Company. “Indigo” uses GOTS-certified indigo, while “Sunflower” gets its yellow hue from weld flowers. “Granite” combines cutch, iron and chestnut, and “Rubia” blends madder root with chestnut tones.
Due to the nature of the dyeing process, every pair carries subtle variations in tone and finish. These stain-like imperfections reflect the organic materials used and make each shoe unique — no two pairs are identical.
The collaborative process took several months of experimentation, balancing colour, fabric and silhouette. The result is a collection that respects craft, encourages individual creativity, and embraces sustainable design.
Customisation and Release Schedule
Beyond the natural dye finish, the “Gesso” collection invites buyers to further personalise their pairs. Whether through coffee staining, additional natural dyes, or other creative methods, each shoe is a living canvas for continued evolution. This approach gives even worn-in sneakers new life, blending fashion and functionality with environmental consciousness.
The “Indigo” and “Sunflower” colourways drop on July 10 for $190 USD. “Blank Canvas” follows on July 17, with “Granite” and “Rubia” arriving by month’s end. All releases will remain exclusive to 3sixteen.com and select flagship locations.
