G-Star has partnered with New York-based designer Caroline Chao to launch the Roll-Up Chair, a modular and conceptual seating piece made from deadstock denim and industrial byproducts. The collaboration is part of G-Star’s “Art of Raw” initiative, which reimagines discarded denim and materials into functional art objects.
Inspired by camping gear and military equipment, the chair can be fully disassembled, reassembled, or even hung on a wall like a garment, challenging traditional perceptions of furniture. Vintage snap buttons and steel components pay homage to G-Star’s denim heritage, while the chair’s surfaces evolve over time, mirroring the wear of a cherished pair of jeans.
Chao, trained as an architect, emphasizes the adaptability of design and the interaction between humans and objects. The Roll-Up Chair embodies a sustainable approach, demonstrating how original materials can be repurposed into an artful, functional design.
The launch took place on September 4, 2025, at Collectible New York, continuing G-Star’s collaboration platform, which features emerging artists like Teun Zwets and Kodai Iwamoto. These artists also work with deadstock denim to merge art, fashion, and functionality.
