Tino Sehgal, the Berlin-based artist, is known for works that resist documentation, existing instead as fleeting “constructed situations” between visitors and performers. Rather than traditional sculpture, his pieces are meant to be experienced, not simply observed. Currently, Sehgal presents his first solo show in Mexico at the new Estación MAZ, Museo de Arte de Zapopan. The exhibition foregrounds these ephemeral encounters, offering works that blur the line between art and life.

Key Works and Performances

At the center of the show is Kiss, a duet of two dancers locked in a passionate embrace. True to Sehgal’s practice, the work does not announce itself as art; it unfolds organically while reflecting viewers’ experiences of intimacy. In addition, the Golden Lion-winning Yet Untitled, first seen at the 2013 Venice Biennale, is on display. The piece brings dancers and singers together in a communal formation, merging pop culture, beatboxing, and spirituality while responding to the performers’ emotions and rhythms.

Public Engagement and New Commissions

Beginning January 29, a daily presentation of These Associations, a new commission, will activate the Andador 20 de Noviembre walkway. Through spontaneous storytelling and personal exchanges, visitors participate directly in unfolding scenes. Building on Sehgal’s 2012 practice at Tate Modern, the work transforms public space into a platform for immediacy, honesty, and shared connection. The exhibition runs through March 1, offering a rare opportunity to engage with Sehgal’s uniquely participatory vision in Guadalajara.
