Japanese wig maker and artist Tomihiro Kono has released a new monograph titled Space Creatures, extending his growing influence across fashion, music, and contemporary art.
Kono has become widely known for his surreal “creature wigs,” sculptural hair works worn by artists such as Björk and Grimes, and presented in collaborations with designers including Junya Watanabe and COMME des GARÇONS. As a result, the release further consolidates his position as a specialist creative partner within high-fashion and experimental performance sectors.
Following his previous publication, Fancy Creatures from 2023, the new book documents a body of work produced between 2022 and 2025. The project was photographed and designed in collaboration with Sayaka Maruyama. The collection presents hair sculptures that resemble unfamiliar organisms and speculative extraterrestrial life forms, combining classic finger-wave references with metallic elements, chromed hardware, and eye-like embellishments.
Kono describes hair as a “second skin,” framing it as a mutable and programmable layer that reflects shifting identity and self-representation.
Space Creatures is priced at $45 USD and is available through Konomad Editions online and in person at Tsutaya Books Ginza in Tokyo through March 16.
