L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts has introduced a new online programme dedicated to the cultural, scientific and artistic dimensions of gemstones. Running from April through June 2026, the initiative reflects a growing shift toward digital learning in design education, while expanding access to traditionally specialised fields such as gemology.
Backed by Van Cleef & Arpels, L’ÉCOLE has, since 2012, positioned itself as a platform for sharing knowledge around craftsmanship and decorative arts. This latest programme, therefore, extends that mission into a global, online format, removing geographic and institutional barriers.
Weekly sessions connect gemology with visual culture
The digital season will spotlight a different gemstone each week, with live one-hour talks led by art historians and gemologists every Tuesday. Open to all and free of charge, the sessions integrate science, history and symbolism, positioning gemstones within broader narratives of art and design.
Consequently, the programme frames gemstones not only as luxury materials but also as cultural artefacts shaped by trade, mythology and technological innovation. Moreover, the structure encourages ongoing engagement, as audiences can follow a curated sequence of topics over several weeks.
Diamonds, emeralds and pearls anchor early programme
The opening session focuses on diamonds, examining their physical properties, historical significance and enduring role in visual culture. The oldest diamonds date back 3.5 billion years. The very origin of the word, “adamas” (“invincible, unconquerable” in Greek), recalls the uniqueness of this gem.
Subsequently, the programme turns to emeralds, tracing their history from ancient civilisations to contemporary jewellery design. From the mythical mines of Cleopatra to today’s Colombian landscapes, here you can discover the legends that surround the green gemstone and what made them prominent in antique and modern jewels.
The third session explores pearls, addressing both their formation and symbolic resonance across time. Since prehistoric times, pearls have fascinated us, as archaeology reveals. From the Renaissance to the present day, the pearl has embodied the very essence of beauty, a triumph over adversity, sensuality and even spirituality – an enduring mystery at the heart of nature.
Expanding access to jewellery arts education
