Original PlayStation Inspires a Laptop Cushion Case

PlayStation and Takarajimasha have announced the First Model Multi Cushion Case BOOK, a functional carry case modelled after the original 1994 PlayStation console. The slim case, designed to hold laptops, tablets, and cables, replicates the first-generation console’s body colour, button placement, and distinctive design details across a 23cm x 33cm footprint.

Rather than relying solely on branding, the product draws directly on the industrial design language of the original hardware. Consequently, the accessory functions both as a practical storage solution and as a miniature interpretation of one of gaming’s most recognisable forms.

The first-generation PlayStation, released in Japan in December 1994, established a visual identity that remains influential within consumer electronics design. Moreover, its flat grey body, angular geometry, and button arrangement helped define the brand’s aesthetic vocabulary.

Takarajimasha has reproduced those elements across the cushion case’s surface instead of applying a conventional logo treatment. As a result, the design achieves a level of accuracy that elevates the object beyond standard licensed merchandise.

Form and Function Reflect Everyday Design Use

At 23cm x 33cm, 2cm deep, and 177g, the case is slim enough to slip into a bag without adding bulk and large enough to accommodate a standard laptop or tablet, along with cables and smaller accessories.

Meanwhile, the profile supports everyday portability while maintaining a lightweight structure. In addition, the padded construction provides space for typical daily essentials without significantly increasing the case’s thickness.

The design decisions are the product’s entire argument.

Therefore, the object demonstrates how archival hardware aesthetics can inform contemporary accessory design. Rather than treating nostalgia as a graphic device, the project translates physical characteristics into a functional format.

Thirty Years of PlayStation Design Heritage Continue to Influence Products

The original PlayStation’s cultural staying power gives this product its context. The console launched 30 years before this product’s release and introduced a generation to titles that defined the medium.

Since then, the console’s visual identity has become deeply embedded within gaming culture and design history. Consequently, the hardware continues to serve as a reference point for lifestyle products in 2026.

The cushion case is not the first time Takarajimasha has translated PlayStation hardware into everyday objects, and it will not be the last. But modelling a functional carry case directly onto the console’s body, rather than simply putting a PlayStation logo on a generic product, is the kind of detail that separates this from standard licensed merchandise.

Accordingly, the release highlights the continued appeal of industrial design-driven merchandise and the enduring influence of PlayStation hardware aesthetics on contemporary product design.

The PlayStation First Model Multi Cushion Case BOOK releases July 6, via Seven Net Shopping and 7-11 in Japan.
