French artist JR has unveiled “La Caverne du Pont Neuf,” a monumental public artwork that transforms Paris’ 17th-century Pont Neuf bridge into an immersive environment inspired by stone quarries and prehistoric caves. Known for his large-scale interventions in urban spaces, the artist has reimagined the historic crossing as a sensory experience that engages sight, sound, and smell.
After weather-related delays and repairs, the installation opened yesterday and will remain accessible around the clock through June 28. Consequently, visitors can experience the work at different times of day as they move through a tunnel-like landscape suspended above the Seine River.
Created as a tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 1985 “The Pont Neuf Wrapped,” the project references the limestone quarries that supplied materials for much of Paris’ architecture. Therefore, JR wraps the bridge with 18,900 square feet of printed fabric depicting Lutetian limestone, revealing the geological origins embedded within the city’s built environment.
Monumental Installation Extends JR’s Exploration of Illusion and Memory
Stretching 120 meters in length and composed of 80 inflated canvas arches, the installation creates a deliberately disorienting passage for visitors.
“It is a symbolic crossing, a step into the unknown, a journey within oneself,” explains JR. “I designed the crossing of ‘La Caverne’ as an experience where fullness and emptiness exist in balance.”

Meanwhile, composer Thomas Bangalter, formerly of Daft Punk, developed a custom electroacoustic soundtrack for the project. In addition, perfumer Sarah Bouasse and Odore Scola created an olfactory environment that evokes earthy and ancient sensations, expanding the experience beyond the visual realm.
As a result, the installation combines architecture, sound design, and scent to create a fully immersive artwork. Furthermore, the project highlights the growing role of multisensory practices within contemporary art and public installations.
The cave motif has appeared repeatedly throughout JR’s recent work. Consequently, “La Caverne du Pont Neuf” builds upon a series initiated in 2020 that examined themes of isolation and perception through trompe-l’oeil interventions in Florence, Mila,n and Rome.
References to Plato’s cave coexist with allusions to early cave paintings, establishing connections between philosophical ideas and humanity’s earliest artistic expressions. Therefore, the installation positions the bridge as both a contemporary landmark and a symbolic prehistoric refuge.
Companion Exhibition Opens at Galerie Perrotin
By turning one of Paris’ oldest monuments into an imagined geological landscape, JR brings together the city’s architectural history and contemporary artistic experimentation. Accordingly, the work offers a meditation on memory, materiality, and the enduring relationship between humans and their environments.

“La Caverne du Pont Neuf” is now on view in Paris through June 28. To mark the occasion, Galerie Perrotin has also organized a companion exhibition featuring new works by JR.
The exhibition remains on view through July 25, extending the artist’s latest exploration of illusion, history, and collective experience beyond the public installation.
