In a press release issued, Canon, the official printing and imaging provider of Expo 2020 Dubai, announced the winners of its much-discussed sustainability-themed competition, ‘Moments that Matter.’ The competition was founded in cooperation with the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) at Expo 2020 Dubai last year with the goal of driving meaningful change and sustainable action through the power of visual storytelling.

Canon asked photographers to enter the ‘Moments that Matter’ competition, which focused on capturing moments that define humanity’s relationship with the world and highlighted sustainable development challenges, in line with the Expo 2020 theme. Participants in the EMEA region were requested to submit five photographs in any of four categories important to global sustainability: economic, human, environmental, or social. ‘Moments that make us’ (Environment), ‘Moments that cure us’ (Human), ‘Moments that rescue us’ (Social), and ‘Moments that develop us’ (Social) were the sub-categories (Economic).

Canon is thrilled to announce Abbas Alkhamis of Saudi Arabia as the grand winner of its sustainability-focused competition, which aims to raise awareness about the world and its inhabitants across all four categories. For using the medium of visual storytelling to connect and persuade people about sustainable development, he will earn a grand prize of USD $8000 and the unique opportunity to be a part of the award ceremony hosted at Expo2020 Dubai.

The competition was part of Expo’s series of interactive events and initiatives aimed at promoting the power of pictures in capturing, preserving, and sharing with the world some of the most inspiring and transformational ideas on display. The competition perfectly aligned with Expo 2020’s themes of Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability, as well as Canon’s corporate focus pillars of the ‘Future of the Planet,’ the ‘Future of People in it,’ and the ‘Future of What is Possible,’ generating much-needed buzz and engagement on sustainability topics in various areas of life. We congratulate all of the winners and are grateful to Canon for addressing the difficult topic of sustainability by giving a creative platform to engage and motivate people.”
