Dubai’s Expo 2020 opened its doors to millions of visitors from all over the world from October 2021 to March 2022, after more than seven years of planning and preparation. The contract for the AV system in the Al Wasl Plaza dome was granted to system integrator Creative Technology Middle East. CTME picked Illusion to power the amazing 360-degree immersive projection, while Bild Studios built the complex content workflows that let artists produce the stunning graphics that wowed the record-breaking crowd.
Dubai Expo took place on a large 4.3-square-mile area in Dubai South, near Al Maktoum International Airport, with 192 countries participating in the display, each with their own individually built pavilion. The Expo offered beautiful installations as well as 60 daily live entertainment that included interactive technology and spectacular performers. The permanent pieces of art were organized under three themed districts: Mobility, Sustainability, and Opportunity, all of which celebrate globalization and international cooperation.
The Al Wasl Plaza, a 65-meter-high, 130-meter-diameter dome with the world’s largest 360-degree projection mapping, was the Expo’s highlight. The outstanding immersive visual experience was given by Christie D4K40-RGB pure laser projectors, LED pixel displays, and interactive content—all driven by disguise.
“As the Official Projection and Display Partner for Expo 2020 Dubai, Christie’s had the chance to collaborate closely with its partners to realize Expo’s vision for the dome and numerous pavilions,” said Joe Graziano, Christie’s EMEA director of sales, entertainment. “We are honored to have been a part of such a historic and memorable occasion.”
The Al Wasl dome was brought to life by Creative Technology’s System Integration team, who deployed 16 disguise gx2 servers that linked with disguise rx machines and disguise’s camera-based projector calibration system, Omnical, to ensure high pixel accuracy over the Dome’s surface.
