“The Distance from Here” is an exhibition at Hayy Arts in Jeddah that showcases many perspectives on space and time. The exhibition, which runs until October 25, features work by 20 artists from Korea, India, Pakistan, Lebanon, Morocco, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Syria.
“It’s about thinking about time and space, and as humans, the idea of our surroundings in the previous few years as a result of the epidemic and everything that’s happened.” Antonia Carter, director of Art Jameel, says, “It’s really reflecting on this remarkable transition that is taking place in Saudi Arabia at this tremendous time for art in the kingdom.”tra
Because “The Distance from Here” is a travelling exhibition that arrived to Jeddah from Dubai, the curatorial team worked hard to maintain not just the artworks but also the exhibition’s soul.
Rotana Shaker, the curator’s assistant, “There is a distinct process for a touring exhibition, and it takes a few months.” We were already planning the next steps when the Dubai exhibition opened, and how we would adapt it to the new environment.
Collecting pieces by a variety of artists, adapting them to the space, and bringing it all to life, according to Carter, is a thrilling experience. The curators’ greatest joy comes from witnessing the audience not only admire the artworks but also recognize themselves in what is displayed on the gallery walls. Hayy Jameel is “dedicated to the community,” Carter noted, based on his name alone.
