On January 23, the Galloire Art Gallery in City Walk, Dubai, will host the debut solo exhibition of Spanish installation artist Daniel Canogar.
With an interactive multimedia installation dubbed Dynamo in the Spain Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, the Spanish artist has already shown work in the Middle East. The piece, which was created in association with the musician Francisco Lopez, had three sculptural screens in the form of interlaced loops that produced audiovisual information in response to visitor input.
Additionally, in 2021, he participated in Noor Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s annual light and art event, when he unveiled the ambitious, building-sized laser projection Bifurcation.
Loose Threads, Canogar’s new solo exhibition in Dubai, explores the various fabrics and patterns that bind together informational threads and how massive amounts of data shape our digitised lives. Loose Threads will present the technological reality of today.
Dubai, a city and region that Canogar believes is the ideal place for his vision, will host the presentation of the textile dimension of technology, which will include cables, base plates, input ports, data flows, and ones and zeros.
According to Canogar, “the Arab culture has a great history and a profound legacy in fabrics and textiles, having formerly dominated the world in artistry and quality.”
“Fabrics reflected and communicated the stories of culture, society, politics, and economy. They were more than just objects to be given or traded. The backdrop of modern-day Dubai, which is very much a city of the future and is setting the standard in many areas of the digital age, combined with that history made it the ideal location to present Loose Threads.
Canogar has researched and investigated how overstimulation and exposure to excessive and exaggerated representations of reality caused by mobile devices have changed the globe over time. These insights have been transformed into a number of interactive works, such as Ripple in 2016, Billow in 2020, and Chyron in 2022.
Through a serene and contemplative experience, Loose Threads explores various facets of contemporary life, from financial instability to life and death during the pandemic, in an effort to help the audience better understand these important subjects.
