The Beautiful Paintings is a new project by British artist Damien Hirst that takes his 1992 Spin Paintings to a tech-heavy level. The project allows collectors to order non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from an app dashboard, minted on the Ethereum blockchain, and choose the shape and size of their painting. The NFTs are priced at $2,000 apiece and signed print-outs range from $1,500 to $6,000.

The project was developed with the art services and technology business Heni, and the “Spin Generator” on the Beautiful Paintings dashboard allows buyers to choose from a menu of styles and colors. The project uses machine learning to generate the sample color names, such as Himalayan Waters, Cracked Grass, and Interdimensional Cloud. There are 25 spin painting styles on offer, with names reminiscent of climactic phenomena or outer space.

The project is a radical move to expand the limits of digital and physical art creation, according to the project statement. The finished work is named using machine learning, with each randomly generated name starting with the word “Beautiful” and ending with the word “Painting”. The randomizing function was included to replicate the unpredictable nature of Hirst’s Spin paintings and to ensure that no two dashboard-generated NFTs will be the same.

A selection of printed works is on display at the Heni Gallery in London’s Soho until 10 April. The projected drop, during which buyers can generate and buy the NFTs, also runs until 10 April. Hirst announced the series on Twitter and said, “I have called the series ‘The Beautiful Paintings’ for obvious reasons”.

Damien Hirst describes the Beautiful Paintings as “a radical move to expand the limits of digital and physical art creation”. It is a fusion of art, technology, and machine learning that explores the possibilities of generating infinite variations of the same art form. The use of machine learning to create the sample color names and the finished work names is a testament to the power of technology in modern art.

The project also showcases the potential of NFTs as a means of collecting and owning digital art. NFTs have become a popular means of buying and selling digital art because of their ability to provide provenance, authenticity, and ownership of a unique digital asset. The use of NFTs in The Beautiful Paintings project adds to the discussion around the value of digital art and the potential of blockchain technology in the art world.

The Beautiful Paintings is a unique and innovative project that pushes the boundaries of art, technology, and machine learning. It showcases the potential of NFTs in the art world and explores the possibilities of generating infinite variations of the same art form. It is an exciting development in the world of digital and physical art that is sure to inspire future artists and collectors alike.
