Unraveling the Tapestry of Time and Place: Nasser Alzayani the winner of the Audemars Piguet Design Award

Step into the world of Nasser Alzayani, a Bahraini-American artist whose unique vision transcends borders and delves into the essence of time and place. With a captivating blend of text, images found objects, and cast creations, Alzayani’s artistic practice is a mesmerizing journey through the realms of research-driven documentation and collective experiences.

Born in 1991 in Manama, Bahrain, Nasser Alzayani now calls Abu Dhabi his home and creative haven. His artwork weaves together themes of factual and fictional archaeology, seeking to uncover alternative narratives that challenge our understanding of collective history.

One of the highlights of Alzayani’s artistic journey is his participation in numerous group exhibitions, showcasing his boundless talent to the world. In 2020, his work was featured in “Kissing Through A Curtain” at MASS MoCA in North Adams, USA, and “The Youth Takeover” at Jameel Art Centre in Dubai, UAE. His artistic prowess was also displayed in the “Glass Triennial” at the Sol Koffler Gallery in Providence, USA, and the “_____scapes” exhibition at Gelman Gallery, Providence, USA, both in 2019. In 2017, “Bayn” at Warehouse 421 in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and in 2016, “Watering the distant, deserting the near” at Al Riwaq in Bahrain, were further milestones in his flourishing career.

Recognized for his exceptional talent, Alzayani has been the recipient of esteemed residencies, further enriching his artistic journey. In 2017, he was bestowed with the Fundación Casa Wabi x ArtReview Residency, followed by the Villa Lena Foundation Residency in 2018. Currently, he is an artist in residence at the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi, embracing new inspirations and nurturing his craft.

Educationally, Alzayani holds an MFA in Glass from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, a testament to his dedication to honing his skills and exploring innovative mediums. He also holds a BArch from the American University of Sharjah, showcasing his diverse interests and commitment to multidisciplinary approaches in the world of art.

Alzayani’s journey as an artist is not merely about creating beautiful works but also about connecting with his audience, evoking a sense of wonder and curiosity in those who behold his creations. His art speaks a language that transcends cultural and geographical boundaries, inviting viewers to explore their own stories within the vast tapestry of collective experience.
