As the nation celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, Casa De La Cultura, a cultural hub nestled in the heart of Baltimore, is proudly hosting a vibrant exhibition that shines a spotlight on the diverse world of Latin-x art. This showcase is not just a testament to artistic expression but also a platform to preserve and promote the rich tapestry of Hispanic/Latino culture and heritage.
The exhibit, a part of Nuestras Raices Inc., a community-based Hispanic/Latino cultural organization founded by Angelo Solera in 2019, is a testament to the power of unity within the Latino community. It features the works of local Latino artists hailing from different corners of the globe, from Argentina to Mexico, each contributing their unique perspective to the vibrant tapestry of Latin-x art.
Pablo Cevallos, a talented sculptor and jewelry designer, expressed his enthusiasm for the exhibition, saying, “This is a really great opportunity for emerging artists to showcase the different aspects of Latin culture because it’s so diverse. From Argentina to Mexico, we’re all different; we’re not the same.”
The cultural resonance of the exhibit extends beyond the art itself. The very essence of Latin-x culture, with its rich storytelling traditions and vibrant cultural expressions, comes alive even before stepping inside Casa De La Cultura. Daniela Godey, an Ecuadorian artist, emphasized the multifaceted nature of the Latino community, stating, “We are all not one-sided; Latino Latinos, like we aren’t stereotypical. We have very many layers.”
The artists behind these captivating pieces draw inspiration from various sources, including their heritage, life experiences, and the world around them. A local Baltimore artist known as ‘Lovoz’ shared, “Many things inspire me. It could be my culture, a chain of events. It could be an article I read, a song heard – in fashion, it could be anything.”
Each work on display serves a dual purpose: not only do they provide emerging artists with a platform to showcase their talents, but they also serve as a powerful medium to narrate the stories and experiences of Latin-x and Hispanic culture and heritage.
For Lovoz, the exhibit represents a chance to break stereotypes and showcase the depth of Latin-X culture. “It makes me feel like finally we have something here where we can come, and network and we can showcase our artwork. We can show the world that we’re more than just what they see or perceive,” Lovoz passionately remarked.
The artists collectively encourage individuals from Latin-x and all cultures to embrace their heritage unapologetically. Cindy Roman, a Colombian first-generation artist, emphasized the importance of self-expression, stating, “Remember you are indigenous to this land, whether North Central, south, or the Caribbean’s — you are rooted in the way you know your roots.”
This exhibition isn’t just about showcasing art; it’s about nurturing the next generation of artists. “I teach kids and upcoming artists and I want them to basically not shy away and basically not tear themselves down, but actually build themselves up and express themselves through art,” Roman added.
Nuestras Raices, the driving force behind this cultural celebration, aims to contribute to the education, preservation, and promotion of the richness and diversity of the Hispanic/Latino culture, art, and artistic heritage throughout Baltimore and beyond. Casa De La Cultura, with its dynamic exhibit, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit and creativity of the Latin-x community during this special time of reflection and celebration.
