Abu Dhabi, a city known for its rich cultural heritage and forward-thinking initiatives, is set to embark on a luminous journey that will transform the capital into a breathtaking citywide light exhibition. Titled “Manar Abu Dhabi,” this artistic extravaganza is a pivotal part of the emirate’s Public Art program, and it promises to dazzle residents and visitors alike. From November 15 to January 30, more than 35 site-specific commissions and artworks will illuminate the city’s landscape, creating a mesmerizing visual experience.
Themed “Grounding Light,” Manar Abu Dhabi will feature an array of light sculptures, projections, and immersive artworks by an eclectic mix of talented artists. Emirati artists like Mohammed Kazem, Jumairy, and Nujoom Al Ghanem will share the spotlight with international luminaries such as Palestine’s Samia Halaby, India’s Shilpa Gupta, and the Japanese art collective teamLab.
The name “Manar,” which means “Lighthouse” in Arabic, is aptly chosen as this exhibition aims to shed light on Abu Dhabi’s coastal areas, including Lulu Island, Corniche Road, Samaliyah Island, Fahid Island, Jubail mangroves, Saadiyat Island, and the Eastern mangroves.
Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, expressed, “Manar Abu Dhabi is more than just an art exhibition. It’s a testament to our long-standing and continued commitment to public art and the cultural growth of our city. Our vibrant, dynamic city is the canvas, and the light art is a bridge connecting our past, present, and future.”
Rita Aoun, DCT Abu Dhabi’s Culture Sector Executive Director, emphasized that Manar aims to engage the community in a dialogue that “connects the aesthetic, historical, and social values of the city.” She stated, “The magic of light art is its ability to transcend traditional boundaries, bringing together people from all walks of life.”
The exhibition will be co-curated by Reem Fadda, the director of the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation and artistic director of Public Art Abu Dhabi, alongside artist Alia Zaal Lootah. Fadda shared, “Grounding Light is an experience designed to transform our perception of the world around us. It brings together an extraordinary array of artists whose works are intended to foster a sense of calm, engagement, and appreciation of Abu Dhabi’s unique biodiversity and natural beauty.”
Manar Abu Dhabi isn’t just about visual splendor; it’s an opportunity for the community to engage in a dialogue that transcends art’s aesthetic boundaries. The event will include a program of discussions, workshops, and performances, making it a comprehensive cultural experience.
This event is a testament to the city’s commitment to fostering imagination, a sense of wonder, and an appreciation for the beautiful natural environment that surrounds Abu Dhabi. With the upcoming launch of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial in November 2024, along with artist commissions, the emirate’s dedication to public art and culture continues to shine brightly. Manar Abu Dhabi is more than an art exhibition; it’s a beacon of creativity and a celebration of the city’s unique cultural tapestry.
