Joshua Mizusawa, an artist hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, has seamlessly woven a tapestry of cultural diversity, personal passion, and artistic mastery into his creative journey. From the early days of sketching in college-ruled notebooks, where people, aliens, and robots came to life in his imagination, Mizusawa’s artistic prowess has evolved into a mature and deliberate exploration of identity and aesthetic fusion.-Description

Rooted in his experience as the fourth child of a mixed-race family, with both Japanese and Hispanic heritage, Mizusawa’s upbringing in Albuquerque provided a rich cultural backdrop. This fusion of traditions, evident in moments like enjoying pozole at Christmas or relishing a bowl of perfectly steamed rice at breakfast, forms the foundation of his artistic inspiration. Mizusawa sees his art as a vehicle not only for self-expression but as a harmonizing force, seamlessly merging the vibrant colours of his hometown with the minimalist aesthetics intrinsic to Japanese art.

Joshua Mizusawa draws inspiration from a diverse array of artistic influences, from Hokusai’s timeless “36 Views of Mount Fuji” to the contemporary pop culture-infused finesse of Takashi Murakami. These influences have shaped his appreciation for good design, skilful execution, and bold creativity, elements that are palpable in his current artistic style.

Characterized by smooth lines, meaningful colours, and minimal shapes, Mizusawa’s work exudes simplicity and impact. His pieces, crafted primarily with fluid matte acrylics, inks, and Japanese brush pens, reflect a commitment to creating a sense of calm that seamlessly integrates into any space. Mizusawa’s art is more than just visual; it is a deliberate representation of his journey, a harmonious blend of diverse influences and a celebration of identity.

While holding a B.A. degree from the University of New Mexico, Mizusawa’s focus is squarely on advancing his art career. Specializing in portraiture and realism, he remains committed to learning and evolving. Currently exploring traditional Japanese woodblock prints and tattoos, as well as experimenting with digital mediums, Mizusawa adapts to the ever-changing artistic landscape. Each day becomes a canvas for practice, learning, and the creation of art that is both meaningful and beautiful, a testament to Mizusawa’s unwavering dedication to his craft and continuous artistic growth.
