Riyadh Art, a pioneering public art initiative and one of the largest of its kind globally, has unveiled four monumental artworks as part of the Riyadh Metro launch. These installations transform metro stations into cultural landmarks, blending art and architecture to elevate the daily commuting experience.

At the King Abdullah Financial District Metro Station, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Alexander Calder’s iconic sculpture Janey Waney takes center stage. Known for his kinetic art innovations, Calder’s colorful and dynamic creation engages visitors with its lively spirit. Nearby, Robert Indiana’s universally recognized LOVE (Red Outside Blue Inside) captivates with its vibrant colors and themes of hope and connection.

The Qasr Al-Hokm Downtown Metro Station, designed by Snohetta, features Ugo Rondinone’s striking golden sculpture The Sun, symbolizing energy and renewal. Complementing this is When the Moon is Full by Saudi artist Zaman Jassim, a reflective piece inspired by Riyadh’s rich cultural heritage.

“These permanent artworks embody our vision of transforming Riyadh into an open-air gallery, enriching quality of life and fostering a deeper connection between people and art,” said Khalid Al-Hazani, executive director of Riyadh Art.

Al-Hazani emphasized the program’s scale: “We have a specialized initiative to install artworks at all 85 metro stations, with many pieces to be completed in the upcoming year.”

Since its inception in 2019, Riyadh Art, led by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, has integrated over 500 artworks into the urban landscape, showcasing the creativity of more than 500 local and international artists. The initiative has hosted 6,000 community activities, attracting over 6 million visitors.

With a mission to position Riyadh as a global arts destination, Riyadh Art continues to champion cultural innovation, enhance community connections, and highlight Saudi Arabia’s commitment to art and heritage. These metro artworks mark another milestone in the Kingdom’s vision to blend culture with daily life.
