Smita Thomas, the founder of Multitude of Sins, has transformed her duplex apartment in Bengaluru. She combines whimsical design with minimalist principles. The project, named Pearls on Swine, merges Thomas’s creative taste with her husband’s preference for simplicity. The result is a space that reflects both of their personalities.
A Whimsical Yet Minimalist Space
The apartment spans two levels. The lower floor has an open-plan living, lounge, and dining area. It also includes the kitchen, library, and guest bedroom. The main bedroom and terrace occupy the upper floor. Throughout the apartment, grey walls are a consistent theme. A unique feature of the space is the concrete floor, which has a playful mosaic, resembling an unfinished tic-tac-toe game.
Thomas believes the flooring exemplifies artistry. It transforms a basic surface into an engaging tactile experience. The entire apartment follows this design ethos. Whimsical elements blend with minimalist functionality to create an inviting atmosphere.
Unique Features and Design Elements
The living area includes a multi-textured couch made of micro velvet, cotton, and corduroy. Leather straps and stainless steel accent the couch. A striking flower-shaped mosaic artwork hangs above it. The design draws inspiration from Maleficent’s horns. Nearby, a pet-proof wall made of charcoal basalt stone is topped with Toronto marble. This creates an elegant yet practical divider.
The extended living area features a geometric bar unit and pub-style seating nook. The bar unit has an inverted trapezoidal shape. It’s covered in brown-grey veneer, and its tall mauve-toned metal handles complement the flooring inlay below. The pub seating integrates seamlessly into the design, providing an inviting space for gatherings.
Functional Yet Artistic Features
The dining space boasts a concrete-finished table with marble inlays. Large, grey-stained wooden legs support it, resembling concrete blocks. A sculptural partition wall separates the dining area from the kitchen. It includes a rugged concrete slab embossed with the names of the couple’s pets.
In the guest bedroom, a capsule-shaped headboard stands out. The principal bedroom has a stainless steel lattice structure for the bed’s headboard. It’s cushioned with pink fabric and silver leather. A triangle-shaped marble piece embedded into the floor mimics an area rug, adding artistic flair.
Bringing Art to Everyday Life
Thomas aimed to create a space where function and art blend seamlessly. She explains, “I wanted to ensure that every material, detail, and curve speaks to who we are, without any fear of judgment.” This design philosophy resulted in a dynamic home. It balances utility with artistic expression, offering a unique and thoughtful space for her family.
Multitude of Sins continues to make its mark on Bengaluru’s interior design scene with this and other innovative projects.
