His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, has issued an Emiri Decree to establish the Sharjah Design Centre (SDC). This new institution will operate as a legally recognised entity with full financial and administrative independence under the ownership of the Sharjah Government. Its headquarters will be in the Sharjah Creative Quarter within the University City of Sharjah, with the possibility of future branches across the emirate.
Objectives and Core Functions
The Sharjah Design Centre aims to foster creativity, innovation, and excellence in design and manufacturing. Its primary objectives include promoting culture and entrepreneurship, integrating innovation, and developing professional skills in prototype design. The centre will also drive sustainable leadership in design quality and enhance the role of manufacturing in society, education, and the economy.
To achieve these goals, the SDC will launch sustainable design initiatives, collaborate with designers and businesses, and organise global exhibitions and exchange programmes. Additionally, it will provide professional training, offer co-working and exhibition spaces, and engage in commercial activities to market its products. The centre will also seek technical and administrative support from specialised agencies and establish partnerships with key institutions.
Governance and Future Operations
The centre will be managed by a director appointed by the Ruler, responsible for overseeing administrative and financial affairs. The director’s duties will include approving policies, supervising operations, and ensuring compliance with regulations. They will also manage contracts, represent the centre in legal matters, and oversee the budget and organisational structure.
The Decree further outlines provisions related to financial resources, fee exemptions, and the execution of executive decisions.
