Zaha Hadid Architects has completed the Capital International Exhibition and Convention Centre (CIECC), hailed as “Beijing’s largest” convention venue. Situated in the Shunyi District near Capital International Airport, the facility is designed to accommodate the city’s growing demand for international conferences.

The expansive complex features nine exhibition halls, three entrance reception areas, a 9,000-seat conference centre, and an integrated hotel. Its design facilitates smooth circulation, ensuring seamless movement for attendees, exhibitors, and event organizers.
Innovative Architecture and Design
The CIECC’s striking form is characterized by fluid curves and pleated facades clad in copper-toned aluminium. These design elements visually soften the building’s large scale while enhancing its architectural presence. A large arch marks the main entrance on the east facade, leading to a central outdoor courtyard. This courtyard functions as a connecting spine, linking the exhibition halls through a series of bridges inspired by interwoven ribbons.
These elevated walkways provide direct access to upper-level spaces while preserving the open-air courtyard experience. The thoughtful design not only enhances aesthetics but also improves accessibility across the venue. Additionally, the hotel and conference centre are strategically positioned near the north entrance, ensuring convenient access for visitors.
Efficient Functionality and Sustainability
To optimize adaptability, Zaha Hadid Architects implemented a lightweight, modular roof system. This innovation enables the creation of expansive, column-free exhibition spaces that can be reconfigured based on event requirements. The structural approach also minimizes construction time, operational costs, and long-term maintenance.
The CIECC prioritizes efficiency by segregating movement flows for people, goods, and vehicles, reducing congestion and ensuring a streamlined experience. This approach allows multiple events to run concurrently without disruption.
With its cutting-edge design and advanced functionality, the Capital International Exhibition and Convention Centre stands as a new focal point for global events in Beijing. It joins a growing list of architectural innovations by Zaha Hadid Architects, further cementing the firm’s influence on modern urban development.
