Marking 90 years since its founding, Finnish furniture brand Artek has teamed up with the beloved Moomin franchise to reimagine two of Alvar Aalto’s iconic furniture pieces. By incorporating original illustrations from the first Moomin comic strip, this collaboration highlights their shared Finnish roots and global cultural influence.

Moomin Doodles Meet Timeless Design

The illustrations, originally drawn by Tove Jansson in Mumintrollet och jordens undergång (Moomintroll and the End of the World), first appeared in a Finnish newspaper in 1947. Now, these whimsical doodles find a new home on Artek’s Stool 60 and Cabinet 250.

Aalto’s Stool 60, first introduced in 1933, remains a staple of Scandinavian design. With its minimalist appeal and stackable functionality, the piece has gained renewed popularity, particularly among younger generations embracing Mid-Century aesthetics.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet 250—often referred to as a monolithic “cocktail cabinet”—also features Moomin imagery. The playful illustrations are hidden within the honey-stained wooden doors, adding a nostalgic charm to the otherwise sleek and structured design.

Blending Modern Minimalism with Playful Elements

The collaboration stays true to Artek’s design philosophy, which prioritizes simplicity and functionality. Aalto’s pioneering use of bent plywood, seen in pieces like the Paimio Lounge Chair (1931), introduced a groundbreaking approach to furniture making. By omitting unnecessary ornamentation, Artek’s designs allow the beauty of the materials and craftsmanship to take center stage.

At the same time, the inclusion of Moomin’s childlike illustrations creates a dynamic contrast. The scattered doodles evoke a sense of spontaneity, resembling sketches drawn absentmindedly by children. This unconventional mix of refined craftsmanship and whimsical artwork reflects an evolving design landscape, where millennials and Gen Z blend collectibles, contemporary media, and timeless furniture in their living spaces.

Limited-Edition Release

Alongside the furniture collection, Artek is also launching an abstract art poster designed by Finnish artist Inka Bell to commemorate its 90th anniversary. Both the Moomin-inspired pieces and the poster will be available starting March 20 through select Artek retailers, Artek-owned stores, and the brand’s online store.
