De Tomaso Automobili has officially revealed the production-spec version of its much-anticipated P72, a supercar designed as a tribute to the golden age of racing. First showcased as a concept at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the final version retains its dramatic retro-inspired design while delivering a pure, undiluted driving experience. The P72, limited to just 72 units, blends heritage with cutting-edge materials and a 700hp supercharged V8.

A Machine Rooted in Heritage and Purity

Drawing direct inspiration from the original 1965 De Tomaso P70—a short-lived project co-developed with Carroll Shelby—the P72 captures the emotional spirit of the past. At its core, the vehicle features a carbon fibre monocoque chassis constructed from a single, uninterrupted weave. As a result, the structural integrity and lightweight build allow for dynamic handling and exceptional balance.

The engineering is completely bespoke. From the push-rod suspension system to the low-slung mid-mounted engine, each component has been designed with performance purity in mind. Moreover, De Tomaso has rejected the modern trend of digital enhancements. Instead, the P72 features no screens, no drive modes, and no electronic interference—just a six-speed manual gearbox paired with an exposed metal shift linkage, inviting total mechanical engagement.

A Handcrafted Interior That Echoes Tradition

While many modern supercars favour technology-heavy cabins, the P72 embraces analogue luxury. Inside, the cockpit is dressed in hand-stitched leather, complemented by milled aluminium switchgear and mechanical dials. These intricate details not only reflect old-world craftsmanship but also enhance the tactile connection between car and driver.

Each of the 72 units will be individually commissioned, ensuring no two cars are alike. Every model will be hand-built with meticulous attention to detail, offering a bespoke experience that aligns with the brand’s heritage. Deliveries are expected to begin in late 2025, marking the return of a revered name with a powerful new statement.
