Spanning 3,500 square metres, the Spanish Pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025 presents a compelling architectural and cultural narrative that celebrates Spain’s heritage, Mediterranean values, and environmental responsibility. Designed collaboratively by ENORME Studio, Smart and Green Design, and EXTUDIO, the project offers a sensorial journey through immersive design, historic ties, and forward-thinking sustainability.

An open, symbolic Mediterranean plaza

Rejecting the trend of monumental façades, the pavilion invites visitors into an expansive, welcoming front square inspired by Mediterranean plazas. This open space fosters community interaction, play, and contemplation. Visitors ascend gently sloped steps designed to mimic sea waves before entering the main experience: the Plaza del Sol. Here, a massive LED screen displays seven video artworks exploring the symbolism of the sun—a motif that connects both Spain and Japan culturally and geographically.

This shared symbolism also pays homage to 16th-century maritime routes established by Spanish navigator Andrés de Urdaneta, reinforcing the pavilion’s theme of global interconnectedness.

A sensory dive into Spain’s cultural ecosystem

The exhibition space unfolds as a descending ramp wrapped in ultramarine tones, simulating an oceanic dive that reflects Spain’s blue economy and maritime identity. This fluid path leads visitors toward a 360-degree audiovisual gallery, gift shop, seafood restaurant, and a multipurpose room—each celebrating Spanish creativity, regional diversity, and festive spirit.

The design also cleverly integrates dual imagery: the sun, common to both nations, and water as a symbol of flow and renewal. These elements anchor the pavilion’s architectural storytelling, graphic branding, and visitor engagement strategy.

Built for zero footprint and future reuse

In alignment with Expo Osaka’s no-legacy-build principle, the Spanish Pavilion is conceived as a circular, demountable structure. It uses dry assembly methods, certified wood (including Japanese red cedar), and recyclable materials. Key elements include T-beams and porticos that can be reused elsewhere.

The project also benefits from partnerships with sustainability experts such as CoCircular, Honext, and Gravity Waves, who provided recycled paper panels and finishes made from repurposed fishing nets. Local craftsmanship adds cultural texture, with furniture from Ondarreta and colourful ceramic façade pieces by Ceràmica Cumella.

Four thematic zones enhancing the visitor journey

  1. The Plaza of the Sun – A welcoming, performance-rich area reflecting Spanish lifestyle.
  2. Currents Towards the Future – An immersive journey inspired by the Kuroshio current, connecting Japan and Spain.
  3. Greetings from Spain – An interactive installation featuring digital postcards and social storytelling.
  4. A Diverse Spain – A multimedia display of the 17 autonomous communities, guiding guests to the final exit.

Through thoughtful architecture, symbolic elements, and low-impact construction, the Spanish Pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025 exemplifies how national pavilions can balance cultural storytelling with sustainable design. It invites the world to experience Spain not just as a destination, but as a lifestyle rooted in warmth, creativity, and respect for the environment.
