Aesop’s Leeds Store Inspired by Victorian Bathrooms

Aesop has unveiled its latest UK retail location in the heart of Leeds’ historic Victoria County Arcade, drawing inspiration from Victorian-era bathrooms and the architectural richness of its surroundings. The store blends modern design with heritage craftsmanship, echoing the detailed mosaic floors and marble columns of the arcade—originally modelled on Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

Victorian Influence Meets Contemporary Retail

Designed by Aesop’s in-house team, the space references a time when bathroom design reflected modernity and evolving hygiene standards in England. “The Victorian bathroom transformed the way hygiene was perceived,” said Marianne Lardilleux, Aesop’s director of global retail design. “It became a living space in its own right, filled with fixtures that embodied both innovation and artful living.”

The Leeds store channels this spirit by incorporating recycled oak flooring that mirrors the rhythmic lines of the arcade’s mosaic tiles. Locally sourced stone and wood add authenticity, reinforcing a connection to both the past and the place.

Heritage Materials and Thoughtful Details

One of the standout elements of the design is the use of original Victorian shelving, sourced second-hand by the team. Built by Globe Wernicke, these modular wooden shelves are not only historically accurate but also represent early examples of factory-produced furniture.

“These shelves were widely used in cosy English interiors,” Lardilleux explained. “They fit the period and reflect the Industrial Revolution’s influence on construction standards.”

The store’s interior features a restrained yet immersive green palette, chosen to complement the orange-toned terracotta stone of the arcade while maintaining the brand’s signature monochromatic design approach. “Green is omnipresent throughout the space, making it the perfect choice to embed the store within the arcade’s aesthetic universe,” she added.

A Harmonious Dialogue with History

From its colour scheme to its material choices, Aesop Leeds is designed to act as a seamless extension of the Victorian arcade, rather than a modern intrusion. The project joins a growing portfolio of artistically curated Aesop stores, including recent award-winning interiors in Madrid and Barcelona.

This opening reaffirms Aesop’s commitment to local architectural dialogue and historically rooted design, offering customers a retail experience that’s both refined and culturally embedded.
