GM China has unveiled the striking Buick Electra Orbit, a concept electric vehicle that reimagines 1950s space-age design through a futuristic lens. Developed by the GM China Advanced Design Center, the bold new EV blends nostalgia and next-generation technology, paying homage to Buick’s heritage while signalling the future of the brand’s electric mobility identity.

A Space-Age Silhouette with Dramatic Proportions

The Electra Orbit concept stretches nearly six metres in length and over two metres in width, presenting a low-slung, sculptural body reminiscent of spacecraft from the jet era. Fluid contours, prominent fenders and oversized 24-inch wheels give the car a commanding road presence. Scissor-style doors add dramatic flair, while a dual-opening frunk reveals a set of bespoke luggage pieces—furthering the luxury narrative.

Aerodynamic elements like a tapered rear end and deployable drag-reduction devices suggest the vehicle is engineered for performance, even in its conceptual state. Its exterior is coated in a custom neutral metallic paint dubbed “Space,” designed to mirror the mystique and elegance of the cosmos.

Immersive Cabin Blending Retro and Future

Inside, the Electra Orbit’s 2+2 seating layout is inspired by celestial aesthetics and mid-century design motifs. A full-width “Ring” digital display arcs across the dashboard from A-pillar to A-pillar, immersing passengers in a digitally augmented driving environment. Depending on the selected drive mode, both the instrument panel and steering wheel reconfigure to shift between traditional and autonomous control layouts.

A spherical centre console controller anchors the cabin, complemented by a wormhole-inspired AI assistant that acts as the vehicle’s intuitive digital interface. Interior accents include red clay-inspired tones, crystal embellishments, custom brocade textures, and a “Digital Illusion Carpet” that reinforces the concept’s theme of celestial luxury.

Vision for Buick’s EV Future

Commenting on the design direction, Stuart Norris, Vice President of Design at GM China and GM International, stated, “The Electra Orbit represents how bold forms, materials and technologies can be executed in an authentic context. It’s a design exploration rooted in legacy but focused on what’s next.”

While the Electra Orbit is not slated for production, its presence signals GM China’s commitment to expanding Buick’s EV portfolio by uniting historical DNA with cutting-edge innovation. The concept aligns with the brand’s broader strategy to create emotionally resonant vehicles that redefine the electric mobility experience for a new generation of drivers.
