Abin Design Studio has unveiled the Ganga Leheri temple in Raichak, West Bengal. Elevated above ground, the temple is designed to withstand the tidal surges of the nearby Ganges River. Commissioned by client Harsh Neotia, who owns a retreat nearby, the temple doubles as both a Hindu spiritual space and a vibrant community hub.
According to founder Abin Chaudhuri, the name “Ganga Leheri” pays tribute to the river’s ever-changing tides. “The elevated design invites tidal waves during high tides, bringing the Ganga closer to the temple, and symbolically integrates the temple within the natural rhythm of the river,” he explained.
Architecture Rooted in Tradition and Nature
Visitors are welcomed through a meandering path that encourages a slow, reflective journey. At the temple’s front, a large plaza hosts community gatherings and public events. The structure rests on a raised plinth, connected to its surroundings by a bridge that leads to the mandapa—a pillared pavilion common in Hindu temple architecture.
The design uses locally sourced materials, including stone and brick. Its corbelled spire, or shikshara, built using local bricks, references the nearby brick kilns. Importantly, the temple avoids steel or concrete, in line with religious customs.
Miniature versions of the spire appear as columns within the mandapa, creating architectural harmony. Between these columns are black stone alcoves that hold idols and offerings, such as diya candles, enriching the spiritual setting.
Blending Function, Form, and Community Use
Next to the pavilion, a utility block functions as a dimly lit portal. This intentional design heightens anticipation before visitors reach the temple’s core. At its centre lies the garbha griha, or sanctum, lit by a skylight that fills the space with natural light—enhancing the divine experience.
The ceiling features motifs narrating the Ganges River’s origin and lifecycle, drawing parallels with the human journey. With its open plan, the temple offers flexibility. It can host community festivals or serve as a quiet retreat for personal reflection.
“A temple is a complex, soulful asset for a community – more than just a religious place, it’s their own living room,” Chaudhuri remarked.
