The 35th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) has officially opened at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi, bringing together publishers, writers, thinkers, academics and creatives from around the world for an expansive programme focused on literature, culture, knowledge and the creative industries.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, the Fair was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Organised by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), part of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the Fair runs until 18 September.
This year’s edition carries the theme ‘Turn The Page, Read The World’ and marks another stage in the Fair’s development from a literary gathering into a broad international platform for cultural exchange, publishing and creative dialogue.
A Global Platform for Books and Culture
The 2026 edition brings together 1,200 exhibitors from 95 countries and features around 1,500 cultural, intellectual, artistic and educational events. Its programme encompasses literature, poetry, music, translation, education, Arabic language initiatives and the creative industries, alongside dedicated activities for children and young people.
During his visit, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed toured several pavilions, including those of Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation, the Balkan Culture Guest of Honour pavilion in collaboration with the Republic of North Macedonia, and the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre.
At the ALC pavilion, he reviewed The UAE in Pictures: Reflections, authored by His Excellency Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji, Executive Director of the Centre, as well as a selection of its digital and audio publications and digital projects.
His Highness also visited the Emirati Pioneers pavilion, featuring His Excellency Mohammed Al Murr, Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation, as well as the Menassah Distribution pavilion and the Chinese national pavilion.
Across the Fair’s halls, he viewed new publications from participating publishers and explored programmes aimed at readers, publishers, creators, children and young people.

Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, said: “The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair continues to fulfil its mission of supporting Arab culture and promoting the Arabic language, strengthening its position as one of the region’s and the world’s leading cultural events.”
He added that the Fair continues to expand its programmes and content with each edition, responding to technological developments and introducing cultural material through modern digital formats. The aim is to make reading and culture more accessible to new generations while maintaining their role as foundations of development.
Al Farahidi, Don Quixote and Balkan Culture
The Fair’s international dimension is reflected in this year’s Guest of Honour programme, which places Balkan culture, in partnership with the Republic of North Macedonia, at the centre of a cultural exchange between Emirati, Arab and Balkan creatives.
The 2026 edition also honours Al Khalil ibn Ahmad Al Farahidi as its Focus Personality, recognising his contributions to the Arabic language and its foundational sciences. Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote has been selected as the ‘Book of the World’, highlighting a literary work presented as transcending cultural boundaries.
The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre will also honour the winners of the 2026 Sheikh Zayed Book Award during the Fair, coinciding with two decades since the Award’s establishment.

The Fair’s programme also explores the future of publishing in a period shaped by technology and artificial intelligence. Professional gatherings will bring translators, publishers and authors together to discuss translation, intellectual property rights and anti-piracy strategies in the digital age.
Connecting Generations Through Reading
Held in conjunction with the UAE’s ‘Year of Family’, the Fair places particular emphasis on culture and reading as tools for learning, human development and social connection.
Children and young adults have dedicated zones and tailored educational programmes combining knowledge, entertainment and practical activities. Workshops are designed to encourage an early relationship with books and the Arabic language while supporting children’s reading, expression and creative abilities.
The ALC is also introducing the annual ‘Emirati Pioneers’ initiative, with its inaugural edition highlighting influential Emirati figures who have shaped the history of the nation and the wider region. The initiative is intended to connect younger generations with national role models while linking reading to historical, heritage and civilisational achievements.
Another new element is an artistic opening ceremony tracing the history of the Fair from its establishment in 1981 through 2026. The programme includes a national segment centred on Emirati melody and song, followed by Al Khalil’s Metaphor: A Legend of Love and Survival. Drawing on Al Farahidi’s legacy, the theatrical work uses the idea of al-mizan, or balance and metre, to explore the written word alongside themes of love and tolerance.
Through its 35th edition, the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair continues to bring together books, ideas, languages, cultures and generations. With its emphasis on Arabic language, international dialogue, publishing and emerging creative industries, the Fair is also looking towards the changing cultural landscape and the future of knowledge.
