The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair will launch a new annual initiative this year to preserve the stories and experiences of Emirati figures who have helped shape the country’s cultural and intellectual landscape.
Titled ‘Emirati Pioneers’, the initiative will debut at the 35th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF 2026). Organised by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), the project will document the journeys of prominent figures in literature, media, art, thought, and cultural and institutional work.
Rather than simply recognising their achievements, the initiative will focus on recording the experiences behind them. Personal stories, professional journeys, ideas, projects, and the wider circumstances in which these figures worked will become part of a growing body of cultural material for future generations.
The project is intended to strengthen the UAE’s collective cultural memory while making these experiences accessible to readers, researchers, and younger audiences.
Preserving the stories behind UAE’s cultural development
‘Emirati Pioneers’ is based on the idea that cultural history is not only found in major institutions or landmark achievements. It can also be understood through the people who helped build those institutions, introduced new ideas, and contributed to the development of cultural life in the UAE.
The initiative will therefore look at individual journeys alongside the broader changes that have taken place in the country since the establishment of the Union in 1971.
By bringing together personal accounts and historical context, the project will create a record of how Emirati literature, media, art, and cultural institutions developed over the decades.
The material produced through the initiative will take several forms, including personal testimonies, published works, specialist discussions, documentary content, and visual material.
