In a first for the UAE, Abu Dhabi is introducing a university-level Bachelor of Arts in Video Game Design, a strategic initiative that reflects the emirate’s ambition to lead in the creative and digital industries. The pioneering course will be offered through a newly established partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), Abu Dhabi University (ADU), and Rubika, a globally recognised French institution specialising in video game design and digital arts.

This dual-certified programme is scheduled to launch in the upcoming academic year and will be hosted on the ADU campus. It aims to combine world-class academic instruction with industry-relevant skills, aligning with national accreditation standards while offering students hands-on experience in one of the world’s fastest-growing creative sectors.

Strategic Alignment with Creative Sector Growth

Saeed Ali Al Fazari, Director of Strategic Affairs at DCT Abu Dhabi, emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative, stating, “This agreement to launch the region’s first Bachelor of Arts degree in Game Design aligns with DCT Abu Dhabi’s strategic priorities to elevate culture and creative industries in the emirate, as well as to inspire and empower youth. By ensuring that aspiring game designers have access to world-class education and practical experience, we are enabling the growth of the gaming sector, regionally and globally.”

DCT Abu Dhabi, through its Abu Dhabi Gaming initiative, will integrate students into the local industry through structured internships, mentorship opportunities, and direct collaboration with game studios. Additionally, the department will fund up to 140 scholarships over a six-year period, ensuring broader access to the programme and fostering a strong local talent pipeline.

Global Academic Leadership and Cultural Exchange

Rubika will play a central role in shaping the academic framework of the programme. The institution will oversee curriculum development, train faculty, and introduce international best practices through exchange opportunities with its campuses abroad.

Commenting on the partnership, Rubika CEO Dr. Stephane Andre said, “Establishing a partnership with ADU and DCT Abu Dhabi is a tremendous opportunity for Rubika. We have long been seeking a trusted partner in the Emirates. Our strategy is to establish ourselves in regions with a strong cultural heritage. By leveraging their creativity, the students in our programs are encouraged to draw from their own cultural roots to contribute to the enrichment of global culture through video games and animated films.”

Academic Innovation Supporting UAE’s Future Vision

Abu Dhabi University’s role will be critical in anchoring the degree within the local academic landscape. The university is committed to delivering future-oriented programmes that meet the UAE’s innovation-driven development goals.

Prof. Ghassan Aouad, Chancellor of ADU, highlighted the institution’s vision, stating, “This partnership reflects our commitment to aligning education with emerging industry needs. By launching the region’s first dual-certified game design degree, we’re giving students access to specialised training that opens up career opportunities, both in the UAE and internationally.”

Positioning Abu Dhabi as a Regional Gaming Hub

Together, DCT Abu Dhabi, Rubika, and ADU aim to transform the capital into a regional hub for game design education. The programme not only supports the UAE’s broader agenda to diversify its economy through innovation and culture, but also establishes Abu Dhabi as a centre of excellence for interactive media and digital arts.
