Adidas has released Trionda, the official match ball for the FIFA World Cup 2026, celebrating the tournament’s first-ever three-country hosting. The design incorporates motifs representing Canada, the USA, and Mexico, featuring a maple leaf, a star, and an eagle. In addition, the ball includes an innovative side-mounted chip system that enhances in-game tracking and VAR support.
Trionda’s four-panel construction is covered in swirls of red for Canada, blue for the US, and green for Mexico, symbolizing the three nations coming together. The ball also features intentionally deep seams and strategically placed debossed lines, while smaller versions of the national symbols are embossed across its surface. Adidas emphasizes that these design elements improve in-flight stability and provide elevated grip, even in wet or humid conditions.
Design, Playability, and Innovation
“For the first time we’ll see the [FIFA World Cup] travel across three countries and with that, comes an official match ball worthy of the occasion,” said Adidas category director Solene Stoermann. “As soon as the tournament hosts were announced, we knew we had to make something special – a ball that can be played everywhere, from the backyard to the world’s biggest stage.”
Sam Handy, Adidas Football General Manager, added: “With Trionda, every detail has an impact. The embossed textures, layered graphics and bold colours make the ball stand out instantly, creating a design that feels alive in your hands. It’s the most visually playful FIFA World Cup ball we’ve ever created – a piece of craftsmanship built for the biggest stage, that makes you want to hold it, admire it, and above all, play with it.”
Connected Technology and Tournament Debut
Trionda also features an evolution in Connected Ball Technology, incorporating a 500Hz inertial measurement unit (IMU) motion sensor chip. Unlike previous designs, the chip sits inside a specially created layer in one panel, with counterbalances across the remaining three panels ensuring flight stability. This system relays precise ball data to the VAR system in real time, helping match officials make faster offside decisions.
The ball is further finished with gold detailing to symbolize the FIFA World Cup trophy. Trionda will debut on 11 June 2026 across 16 stadiums and 48 teams in Canada, the USA, and Mexico. Ahead of its launch, some critics compared it to the 2010 Jabulani ball, citing challenges in playability. Nonetheless, anticipation remains high for the first World Cup played across three nations, promising a memorable showcase of football and design.
