Artes Mundi, the UK’s biennial exhibition and international contemporary art prize, unveiled its shortlist for its tenth edition this week. Two Arab musicians are among the international nominees: Alia Farid of Kuwait and Mounira Al-Solh of Lebanon.
The works of the artists will be displayed in the biennial exhibition, which will run from October 2023 to March 2024. The coveted contemporary art award, which will be announced at the exhibition, will be worth around $50,000 to the recipient.
Farid is a multidisciplinary artist whose work ranges from writing and drawing to film sculpture and installation. She has exhibited in Germany, Japan, Spain, the United States, and other countries.
Al-Solh is a visual artist who works in a variety of mediums, including video installations, paintings, drawings, and needlework. Her work is primarily concerned with self-reflection, feminism, and micro-history, as well as social and political issues.
She has had exhibitions in the United States, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Turkey, and Qatar, among others.
Rushdi Anwar of Kurdistan, Carolina Caycedo of Colombia, Naomi Rincon Gallardo of Mexico, Taloi Havini of Papua New Guinea, and Nguyen Trinh Thi of Vietnam will fight with Farid and Al-Solh.
