This past weekend, Angela Bassett attended the WACO Theater Center’s 2022 Wearable Art Gala with her son Slater and husband Courtney B. Vance. At the ceremonial gathering, the seasoned actress was acknowledged.
On Saturday, Angela posted to her social media followers, “I’m the luckiest person in the world right now with not one, but TWO lovely guys celebrating with me tonight” (Oct. 22). Along with Angela, who was dressed to the nines in a stunning green gown that evoked the 1920s and 1930s, Courtney B. Vance and Slater were also in sharp attire.
The theme of the 2022 Wearable Art Gala was “Step Into Harlem Nights,” which paid homage to the Harlem Renaissance. The celebration also benefited WACO Theater’s youth and mentoring initiatives. Angela Bassett received the Film & TV Icon Award. Tina Lawson’s husband, Richard Lawson, commented on the community service their theater continues to provide despite the hurdles posed by the coronavirus outbreak.
“As we manage the pandemic’s hurdles, we are pleased for the opportunity to convene in person again and garner support for the artists, audiences, and young people that our work serves and will continue to serve,” Lawson told the press. “[The 2022 Wearable Art Gala is] a celebration with a cause, and after two years virtually, I’m pleased we can connect, continue to pour into our mentees and celebrate a piece of our history via this creative experience,” said the theater’s co-founder.
Mark Bradford was also given the Art Icon Award at this year’s Wearable Art Gala. During the ceremony, Chloe Bailey and Halle Bailey performed musical tributes. This year’s event also featured a special performance by Andra Day. The charity event was presented by Keke Palmer, with art auctioneer Star Jones.
