Italian police have apprehended a man believed to be responsible for setting fire to Michelangelo Pistoletto’s Venus of the Rags installation in Naples. The suspect, identified as a 32-year-old homeless man, was tracked down by authorities after reviewing security footage and tracing him to a soup kitchen, as reported by CNN and The New York Times. Artnet News has sought further information from Italian police but has not received a response at the time of writing.

The Venus of the Rags installation juxtaposes a statue of the Roman goddess Venus with a heap of rags, serving as a commentary on consumerism and the degradation of society. The artwork, created in 1967, has multiple versions displayed in museums worldwide. However, a new and monumental rendition of the installation had recently been inaugurated in Naples’ Piazza del Municipio, located in the heart of the city. Tragically, a fire engulfed the rags, causing the polyurethane statue of Venus to melt, leaving only the metal frame behind.

Enza Amato, president of Naples’ municipal council, expressed strong condemnation for the act in a translated statement, stating that “setting fire to a work of art is a very serious act that must be strongly condemned.”

The destruction of Pistoletto’s iconic installation has sparked outrage within the art community and the general public. The piece held significant cultural and artistic value, embodying the artist’s vision and social commentary. The loss is not only a blow to the local art scene but also to the global appreciation of Pistoletto’s work and the broader Arte Povera movement.

Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the motive behind the arson and gather evidence for the prosecution. The arrested suspect will face charges related to the destruction of the artwork and potentially additional offenses, depending on the outcome of the investigation.

Efforts may be made to restore or recreate the installation, but the loss of the original artwork remains significant. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting artistic and cultural heritage, and the need for enhanced security measures to safeguard such valuable works from acts of vandalism.

As the investigation continues, the art world and the public eagerly await updates and hope that justice will be served for the destruction of this revered artwork.
