The 171 exhibitors from 32 nations and territories that will take part in the 2023 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong have been revealed. The event will take place at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre from March 23 to March 25, 2023, with two VIP preview days starting on March 21.
The 171 exhibitors are a 24 percent improvement over the 130 galleries that took part in the 2022 edition, but they are still quite a bit less than the over 240 companies that took part in the 2019 edition.
The fair has made a significant change in its management in addition to releasing its list of exhibitors. This comes just one week after Noah Horowitz, Art Basel’s newly appointed CEO, assumed control on November 7.
Adeline Ooi, the organization’s longtime leader, will continue as Art Basel’s Asia director. Still, she will focus more on “guiding the strategic development of Art Basel’s initiatives in Asia,” particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
The new director of the event, Angelle Siyang-Le, will fill the newly created role of Art Basel Hong Kong director. For the past ten years, Siyang-Le has served as the head of development for Greater China and the regional head of gallery relations for Asia at Art Basel.
Siyang-Le stated, “I look forward to further strengthening the show’s position as Asia’s premier fair together with my colleagues and the broader Art Basel community. To further cement Hong Kong’s status as a premier cultural center, I am eager to collaborate closely with the city’s thriving cultural community.”
On the other hand, the press release for the fair states that the 2023 edition will be “the first edition to take place since Hong Kong lifted the mandatory hotel quarantine,” suggesting that the fair will have more international galleries participating and more visitors from abroad than the 2021 and 2022 editions.
Additionally, several galleries—including Cardi Gallery, Galerie Max Hetzler, Simon Lee Gallery, Petzel, Timothy Taylor, and Waddington Custot—as well as 21 exhibitors—including Monique Meloche, Jan Kaps, Venus Over Manhattan, Denny Diamond Gallery, In Lieu, and SMAC Art Gallery—will take part for the first time since the pandemic.
Currently, 32 galleries have locations in Hong Kong, and more than two-thirds of the exhibitors have at least one exhibition space in the Asia-Pacific area. Local businesses, including 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, de Sarthe, Empty Gallery, and Ora-Ora, will be present.
