Audemars Piguet has unveiled the Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5, marking the conclusion of its pioneering Research & Development series. This is the first Royal Oak “Jumbo” to combine two major complications within Gérald Genta’s iconic 39 mm by 8.1 mm profile. The titanium case is paired with the signature Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50 dial, while two radial subdials flank a flying tourbillon at six o’clock.
Innovative Calibre and Ergonomics
At its heart, the patented Calibre 8100 unites a flyback chronograph with a flying tourbillon and a rare instant-jump minute counter. To enhance ergonomics, the R&D team reduced the push-piece travel to 0.3 mm and the activation force to 300 g, referencing the modern smartphone buttons. This was achieved while ensuring water resistance and maintaining precision.
The model also features a discreet function-selector crown, replacing the traditional pull-out stem, alongside flat glass-box sapphire crystals hollowed from within. This innovation preserves the watch’s slim profile without sacrificing hand clearance or winding efficiency.
