Born and raised in Canada with Indian origins, Babita Shamji began her artistic career in 2017. After leaving Canada in 2005, she embarked on a new journey to West Africa and lived in several countries over the span of ten years before finally settling in Dubai. While pursuing her passion for the arts, she took some art classes as a hobby, but eventually pursued a serious course on fine arts at the esteemed Lotus Educational Institute Dubai, which certified her as a fine artist.
Art has always been an integral part of Babita’s life, and she has always been drawn towards visual arts, dance, music, and performing arts. Her figurative abstract works embody who she is as an artist. She connects lines, shapes, forms, and gestural marks to achieve a modern effect, finding the essence with minimal details and a limited color palette.
Babita Shamji draws inspiration from freedom of expression, and abstract art is her forte. She enjoys experimenting with different mediums such as collages, charcoal, chalk, and textures to bring depth to her art pieces. She has created a series of figurative abstract African works that have been featured in numerous exhibitions and caught the attention of notable curators and collectors. Her works have been exhibited in Italy, Canada, Africa, and the UAE.
In her artist statement, Babita emphasizes that her work is driven by her passion for creativity, and she seeks to recreate pieces that had a visual and emotional impact on her. Her inspiration comes from nature, humanity, experiences from travel, and the emotions she felt in certain events in life. Her work reflects her appreciation of the beauty of women, both interior and exterior, and the spirit of people.
