BALMUDA has introduced “The Clock,” a refined desktop timepiece developed in collaboration with Jony Ive and his studio LoveFrom. Positioned at the intersection of industrial design and ambient technology, the device reflects a growing emphasis on sensory-driven product experiences.
A reinterpretation of time through light and form
BALMUDA has unveiled “The Clock,” a reimagined desktop timekeeper designed in collaboration with Jony Ive’s studio LoveFrom. Drawing inspiration from the classic pocket watch, the device is meticulously milled from a solid block of aluminum, resulting in a robust yet elegant modern aesthetic.
Rather than relying on conventional clock hands, the design introduces a “Light Hour” display that communicates time through subtle illumination. Consequently, the passage of hours is marked by a soft, pendulum-like visual rhythm paired with a gentle chime. This approach reframes timekeeping as an atmospheric experience, aligning with contemporary trends in minimal interface design.
Compact design with adaptive functionality
Designed for portability, “The Clock” measures 7.5 centimeters square and weighs approximately 200 grams. Moreover, it includes a built-in battery that supports up to 24 hours of operation, with USB-C charging ensuring ease of use across environments. As a result, the device transitions seamlessly between workspace and travel contexts.
Beyond its primary function, the clock integrates audio features tailored to different moments of the day. Its alarm system gradually introduces natural environmental sounds—such as morning ambiance inspired by Milan—beginning three minutes before the set time. Therefore, the waking experience becomes more gradual and less disruptive.
Sound, focus, and personalized environments
In addition, the device incorporates a timer function designed for focused work sessions, ranging from one to 60 minutes. This feature pairs with specialized white noise engineered to reduce ambient distractions, supporting concentration in dynamic settings. Meanwhile, a dedicated “Relax Time” mode offers immersive soundscapes, including a crackling fireplace or flowing river, delivered through integrated stereo speakers.
These layered functionalities extend the object’s role beyond timekeeping into wellness and productivity. Furthermore, users can customize alarms, sound profiles, and display brightness through the BALMUDA Connect app, reinforcing the product’s adaptability within digital ecosystems.
“The Clock” is priced at ¥59,400 JPY (approx. $373 USD) and is currently available through BALMUDA’s official online store. Ultimately, the release highlights how contemporary product design continues to merge tactile craftsmanship with ambient technology, offering users a more holistic relationship with everyday objects.
