Basura, Yerba Madre Unveil Biodegradable Flowering Shoes

Yerba Madre, the newly rebranded yerba mate company, has teamed up with New York design studio Basura to create a bold statement in sustainability: shoes made from dirt that dissolve as you walk. Named the Dirt Shoes, these clogs are designed to break down naturally, releasing wildflower seeds with each step.

The initiative supports Yerba Madre’s brand vision following its rebrand from Guayaki. It aims to spark curiosity and act as a symbol of regeneration and circularity, reflecting the brand’s deeper commitment to giving more back to the Earth than it takes.

Natural Materials and Handcrafted Form

The shoes are sculpted in the shape of clogs, with subtle sneaker-like details including a textured toe and midsole impressions. They are formed from a blend of soil, organic fibres, and Acacia gum (tree sap), with wildflower seeds embedded into the soles.

“We wanted to surprise people,” said Rajeev Basu, founder of Basura. “The idea of a stylish sneaker made entirely from dirt felt like a powerful way to communicate regeneration.”

As wearers walk, the shoes begin to crumble, distributing seeds and returning fully to the earth. Designed to last just a few minutes in motion, the shoes emphasize ephemeral design with environmental purpose.

Designed to Disappear

The Dirt Shoes had to meet two unusual design requirements. They needed to be stable enough to wear briefly but still fall apart naturally to fulfill their ecological purpose. Basura used 3D-printed molds and low-impact techniques to shape the shoes, which were then crafted and finished by hand.

“Every pair is different,” said Basu. “They’re handmade, biodegradable, and designed to behave uniquely.”

Made entirely from natural components, the shoes are 100 percent biodegradable. Their material breaks down into soil-friendly fragments while leaving behind a trail of native wildflowers.

A Symbol of the Rebrand

This project is part of a broader rebranding effort by Yerba Madre. While not intended for commercial release, the Dirt Shoes represent the brand’s dedication to environmental storytelling through bold, artistic collaboration.

With their poetic blend of fashion, sustainability, and natural regeneration, the Dirt Shoes deliver a message that transcends style—one rooted in innovation, environmental awareness, and renewed connection to the planet.
