Bonhams has opened its new US headquarters at 111 West 57th Street, relocating from its former Madison Avenue location. Notably, the move secures a presence on Manhattan’s Billionaire’s Row and signals a broader expansion strategy in the US market. At the same time, the new site is intended to operate as a more public-facing cultural destination for collectors and art audiences. Moreover, the relocation strengthens the group’s global footprint as competition intensifies for high-value consignments. Consequently, the headquarters is positioned to support both commercial activity and audience engagement within a single platform.
Across 42,000 square feet, the new headquarters unites the historic Steinway Rotunda with an 80-foot glass atrium. Meanwhile, two auction rooms, a triple-height gallery, and integrated studios, storage, and staff offices support daily operations. In addition, the restored Steinway Hall now operates as an intimate exhibition venue alongside a grand central staircase. As a result, the four-storey facility brings exhibitions, auctions, and public programming into one integrated environment.
Currently, the opening programme begins with Striking a Chord, which draws on the building’s musical and artistic legacy. Specifically, the exhibition presents works by John Chamberlain, Francis Bacon, Banksy, Constantin Brancusi, and others, exploring how art extends into sound, space, and emotion. Nearby, the 1919 Steinway & Sons Model B Grand Piano used by Elton John to record his 1974 album Caribou anchors the Rotunda display. Subsequently, the piano will feature in opening performances before appearing in the forthcoming Masters of Pop sale in April. Upstairs, Modern Cuban Painters from Havana to New York revisits the landmark 1944 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art through works by Wifredo Lam, Mario Carreño, Cundo Bermúdez, Mariano Rodríguez, and Amelia Peláez. In parallel, further highlights include selections from February’s online sales, the biannual Cuban art sale, a major work by Osman Hamdi Bey, and Heavyweights & Headliners: Legends in Sports and Rock.
“Opening our new US flagship marks a defining moment for Bonhams,” said the house’s US Managing Director, Lilly Chan. “This building enables a more experiential approach to the way we engage with collectors, audiences and partners – bringing together exhibitions, auctions and public programming in a far more expansive and meaningful way.”
