Cathedral of Brasília

  • The Cathedral of Brasília is the Roman Catholic cathedral serving Brasília, Brazil, and serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Brasília.
  • It was designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and calculated by Brazilian structural engineer Joaquim Cardozo, and was completed and dedicated on May 31, 1970.
  • In the square access to the cathedral, are four 3-meter (9.8 ft) tall bronze sculptures representing the four Evangelists created by sculptors Alfredo Ceschiatti and Dante Croce in 1968.
  • A 20-meter (66 ft) tall bell tower containing four large bells donated by Spanish residents of Brazil and cast in Miranda de Ebro also stands outside the cathedral, to the right as visitors face the entrance.

The Shard

  • The Shard also referred to as the Shard of Glass, Shard London Bridge, and formerly London Bridge Tower, is a 72-story skyscraper, designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, in Southwark, London, that forms part of The Shard Quarter development.
  • Standing 309.6 meters (1,016 feet) high, The Shard is the tallest building in the United Kingdom, and the seventh-tallest building in Europe.
  • It is also the second-tallest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom, after the concrete tower of the Emley Moor transmitting station. It replaced Southwark Towers, a 24-story office block built on the site in 1975.
  • The Shard’s construction began in March 2009; it was topped out on 30 March 2012 and inaugurated on 5 July 2012.
