Masanaka Sakao’s brand, SUBJECT., has launched an upcycled bag collection in collaboration with DHL, reinterpreting the shipping company’s retired courier uniforms. The project transforms these materials into premium bags, combining the rugged authenticity of the originals with Sakao’s refined design perspective. As a result, the collection merges sustainability with artisanal craftsmanship and functional style.
Design and Production
Skilled artisans from Toyooka City in Hyogo Prefecture and Kurashiki City in Okayama Prefecture participated in both planning and production. Each piece preserves the texture and history of the original uniforms while being reconstructed into wearable, high-quality bags. Furthermore, a portion of the sales is donated to the NPO Made in Japan Project, supporting regional industries and the preservation of traditional craftsmanship. Tony Khan, President and Representative Director of DHL, emphasized the cultural significance of the project: “Our uniforms are marked with the pride and history of our staff who have been active on the front lines of global logistics. We feel great significance in seeing them resurrected as products with new value.”
Sustainability and Access
The initiative reflects the ethos of SEEKER CREATIVE STUDIO, Sakao’s creative collective, which has consistently developed sustainable projects, including MSK. By partnering with DHL, the project highlights cross-border collaboration to create environmentally conscious fashion. The collection is now available for purchase, with further details accessible via the official SUBJECT. website.
