Dohee Kim, founder of XLIM, has revealed his latest collaboration with New Balance, offering a new take on the 509 model. The upcoming release marks a bold departure from his previous work with the Boston-based footwear brand. While his last collaboration focused on sleek designs with black-dominated palettes and shiny overlays, this version embraces rich textures and vibrant colors.
A Bold Shift in Design
Kim previously helped revive the early-2000s New Balance 509 with a modern, technical approach. His latest design moves in a different direction by introducing color-saturated red suede overlays paired with a natural rubber gum sole. The move toward softer textures and bright colors aligns with the aesthetic shifts seen in XLIM’s “Episode 7” collection, which highlighted bold CMYK hues and contrasting materials.
Continuing the serial nature of XLIM’s “episodes,” Kim also teases a second black colorway of the 509. This version features black suede overlays that contrast against dark purple mesh underlays, creating a deep, ink-toned palette. The skidded midsole, a signature element of Kim’s past designs, enhances the shoe’s worn-in appeal while blending technical and naturalistic finishes.

New Balance has not yet confirmed an official release date or pricing details. However, the Dohee Kim x New Balance 509s are expected to drop in Fall 2025. Fans of Kim’s collaborations can anticipate a unique blend of innovation, style, and functionality in this latest addition to the 509 lineup.
