The winner of the fifth Murals and Art Contest at the Waterfront Market has been announced. Among 250 submissions, Sudheer Perinjat’s piece titled “My Dubai, My Confidence” was selected, and as a result, Perinjat was awarded Dh30,000 and a permanent exhibit area at Deira’s Waterfront Market.
The contest for this year asked artists to envision the appearance of the emirate after Expo 2020 Dubai. Perinjat’s artwork, which took over 100 hours to finish, portrays a young Emirati girl gazing optimistically towards the Dubai skyline, accompanied by astronauts, drones, and other UAE residents interacting with each other.
“Spectators will get to see Dubai’s future through her eyes with different elements around the girl covering sustainability, futuristic means of transportation and more,” Perinjat reportedly said.
The Waterfront Market’s senior marketing officer, Maitha Almarri, alongside Khalil Abdulwahid Hassan, director of Dubai Culture’s Fine Arts Department, and Lachlan Gyde, an executive director at Ithra Dubai, constituted the judging panel. They unanimously determined that Perinjat’s entry was the most appropriate for the competition’s theme.
Almarri said that “The entries this year have been the best so far since the launch of the competition back in 2018… Every year, when going through the entries, we follow the same set of criteria such as the use of colours, the style of the painting, the medium used, how relevant it is to our chosen concept and the composition of the elements within the artwork. With Sudheer’s artwork, we unanimously agreed that it ticked off all boxes.”
Perinjat attributes the triumph of his artwork to the accomplishments and advancements of Dubai, which he regards as a significant source of inspiration and cause for festivity.
