Dyson has introduced the PencilVac, a groundbreaking vacuum cleaner that the company is calling “the broom of the future.” With a diameter of just 38 millimetres, the PencilVac is officially the slimmest vacuum Dyson has ever produced—and perhaps the slimmest in the world. Engineered for hard floors yet capable of whole-home cleaning, this lightweight, cordless device is the latest innovation from the tech firm known for transforming household appliances.
Design That Merges Function and Form
At first glance, the PencilVac resembles a broom with its streamlined, continuous profile. However, within this minimalist structure lies an advanced ecosystem of Dyson’s proprietary technology. From the battery and motor to the suction mechanism and dust bin, every component is housed inside the cylindrical body.
“We aimed to fit everything into 38 millimetres,” explained Dyson design manager Sam Cole. “That includes the top section and what we refer to as the handle—but in reality, the whole thing is a handle.”
Powered by Dyson’s newly developed Hyperdymium motor—described as the brand’s smallest and fastest motor—the PencilVac achieves a delicate balance between ergonomic comfort and powerful performance. Cole noted that the 38-millimetre form factor, also used in Dyson’s Supersonic hair dryers, was chosen after years of research into usability and power density.
Built From Scratch for Seamless Utility
One of the core challenges, according to Cole, was engineering a vacuum that compresses cutting-edge performance into such a compact form. “Every single thing had to be engineered from scratch,” he said, underscoring the project’s complexity.
Inside, the PencilVac features a two-stage dust filtration system. Dust is drawn into an air-compressing bin that maximizes capacity without affecting airflow. Meanwhile, a swappable battery ensures extended use for larger cleaning tasks.
Designed for modern living, the PencilVac lies just 95 millimetres tall when flat, making it perfect for cleaning under low furniture and navigating tight spaces. Although optimized for hard floors, Dyson emphasizes its capacity as a full-home solution. “About 60% of homes globally have hard floors with occasional rugs,” said Cole. “This vacuum is built to perform well in that environment—but it also handles carpets with ease.”
Pushing the Boundaries of Everyday Innovation
This latest launch adds to Dyson’s expanding ecosystem of high-performance household products, which already includes bladeless fans, purifying headphones, and robotic home assistants. The PencilVac reaffirms the company’s commitment to functional innovation, proving that performance need not come at the expense of simplicity or elegance.
For users seeking a tool that blends refined design with powerful utility, Dyson’s PencilVac may very well redefine what a vacuum can—and should—be.
