Japanese artist En Iwamura has collaborated with London-based platform Avant Arte to unveil a pair of sculptural editions titled Neo Jomon: Biomorphic fantôme. These new works draw inspiration from the Japanese concept of ma—the space between forms and moments—and embody Iwamura’s continued exploration of presence, balance, and quietude.
Known for his playful, pop-ceramic forms that blend traditional Jomon influences with contemporary art language, Iwamura here channels a deeper calm. The two new sculptures are carved from white and red Bardiglio Nuvolato marble, and each features biomorphic curves with subtly raked textures. Their forms evoke the quiet flow of Zen gardens, inviting viewers to reflect on stillness and transition.
A study in flow and spatial rhythm
Describing the philosophical core of the work, Iwamura notes that ma is “a presence that exists between one thing and another… between moments in time.” These sculptures do not simply represent objects, but rather act as conduits for a rhythm that is both internal and environmental.
By focusing on organic, fluid shapes and tactile finishes, Iwamura invites collectors to embrace this liminal presence in their own spaces. His work becomes more than a visual encounter—it becomes an invitation to contemplate emptiness as a fertile space of connection.
