Winkelhaus, designed by estudio kmmk, introduces a new residential project in Winkel, Switzerland. The single-family home spans 643 square meters and represents the studio’s first completed project in the country.
Notably, the design responds directly to the surrounding forest and valley terrain. As a result, the building adopts a gentle arc that aligns the main living areas toward the landscape while simultaneously shielding the residence from the street. Consequently, the structure forms a radial sequence of rooms that anchor the house into the hillside.
At the same time, this configuration ensures that daily living spaces maintain a constant relationship with the shifting seasons and the broader natural environment.
Material strategy emphasizes light and sustainability
Concrete surfaces and large glazed openings frame expansive views of the valley. Meanwhile, the orientation of the building maximizes daylight penetration throughout the interior.
Furthermore, the layout creates fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor areas, strengthening the visual and spatial connection to nature. The project therefore highlights sustainability and craftsmanship as core architectural principles.
Minimal interior contrasts with sculptural exterior
In contrast to the robust exterior envelope, the interior adopts a restrained and minimal aesthetic. Whitewashed natural wood, plaster walls and pale flooring establish a calm, nearly monochrome environment.
As a result, the interior functions almost like a gallery space that directs attention outward toward the surrounding landscape. In addition, high-quality fixtures and materials from brands such as Dornbracht, Miele, BWB, Huber Fenster AG, Senso and Wever & Ducré reinforce the project’s emphasis on precision and material quality.
