The much-anticipated fourth Exhibit Columbus exhibition, “Public by Design,” is set to open today, unveiling a stunning collection of 13 new works of art and architecture. These installations are carefully crafted to not only celebrate and entertain but also to enrich the legacy of Columbus and its rich architectural heritage.

With over a year’s worth of planning, the Exhibit Columbus installations are ready to make their grand debut. The opening weekend promises an array of engaging activities, including an activation moment and guided tours that provide visitors with insights into the design teams behind these remarkable creations.

Visitors will have a unique opportunity to connect with the entire Public by Design team, which encompasses six Curatorial Partners, four J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize Recipients, seven University Design Research Fellows, the High School Design Team, and Communication Designer. This inclusive approach brings together residents of Columbus and global visitors in celebration of the intersection between art, architecture, and public spaces.

Richard McCoy, the executive director of Landmark Columbus Foundation, the non-profit organization responsible for Exhibit Columbus, emphasized the collaborative essence of the exhibition, stating, “This exhibition shows how working together in the public realm with art and architecture allows us to achieve a purpose much greater than we can alone.” McCoy commended the unique approach taken by the curatorial team, blending local community connections with international expertise to bring this exhibition to life.

The opening day features a range of events, starting with an Exhibition Tour at 9:30 a.m. from Hotel Indigo. Later in the afternoon, a Curatorial Conversations session will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at First Christian Church. Activities at the installations are also lined up for the day, offering diverse experiences such as a saxophone set at Side Effects and a game day at Ground Rules, among others. All these activities are open to the public free of charge.

Among the engaging events, participants will have a chance to envision the future of the Bartholomew County Public Library, explore various installations, and even join in the festivities at the “Rock the Block” party and dance show from 7 to 10 p.m. at Fourth and Washington streets. This location hosts one of the Miller Prize installations, Interoculus, featuring a captivating lighted dome over the intersection.

The Exhibit Columbus “Public by Design” exhibition will be on display until November 26, offering a range of additional events during its run. These include Miller Prize Conversations with recipients and special guests, Next Generation Day for youth and families, and Activations in Space: the 2023 University Design Research Fellowship Colloquium, in partnership with Ball State University and Indiana University. This exhibition promises a captivating journey into the intersection of creativity and architecture that is not to be missed.
