The vibrant streets of DeLand are set to transform into a sprawling canvas of creativity as the Fall Festival of the Arts takes center stage this weekend. DeLand’s largest annual event, the festival promises a dynamic showcase of artistic prowess, attracting over 100 artisans who will display and sell their creations to an expected crowd of 50,000 attendees.
Event organizer Mallory Fernandez, brimming with excitement, shared, “The Festival of the Arts DeLand is the biggest weekend for downtown DeLand. They block off the streets. No fee to get in — it’s free to the public. They can walk around as much as they like.”
The festival, spanning Saturday and Sunday, promises a diverse array of artistic expressions, from traditional paintings to contemporary sculptures, capturing the essence of the local and global art scene. The streets of downtown DeLand will serve as an open-air gallery, providing a platform for artists to engage with the public and showcase their talent.
Local artist Jack Hill, a seasoned participant in the festival, expressed his enthusiasm for the event. “It’s a well-done show with a lot of hard-working people and a great variety of artists. And there is camaraderie among the artists that do the outdoor shows.”
For three decades, Hill has left his mark on the art world by meticulously crafting bronze statues, which he sells to collectors worldwide. Speaking passionately about his work, Hill explained the intricate process behind his sculptures, revealing that each piece takes between four to six months to complete. Starting as a clay mold, the sculptures eventually take the form of timeless bronze statues that serve as cherished heirlooms, passed down from generation to generation.
” You know, when somebody buys a sculpture from me, they bought an heirloom that can be passed down from generation to generation,” Hill remarked, emphasizing the lasting impact of his art.
Hill’s sculptures, known for their craftsmanship and attention to detail, often command prices in the thousands of dollars, reflecting the value and uniqueness of each piece.
The Fall Festival of the Arts will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, providing ample time for art enthusiasts and the curious alike to explore the myriad creations on display. Beyond the art, the festival is set to create an immersive experience, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for the rich tapestry of artistic expressions that define the cultural landscape of DeLand. As the streets come alive with creativity, the Fall Festival of the Arts stands as a testament to the enduring power of art to bring people together and enrich the soul.
